Response to Shape #938 Vase Question In Monday's Gazelle Gazette

Monday's Question

We recently acquired this 938 vase engraved in what we thought was Green Jade over Alabaster. All of our other Green Jade pieces react for uranium under uv lighting. This does not. We are curious if this may be some other green that we were not able to find (Opaque Green?). Also, this is the first we have seen the diamond punty mark.

Hi Alan,

Bobby here. The vase in questioned was described by Steuben as being Green Jade. Whether they altered the formula I have no idea, but I have also seen very different types of Green Jade in vases that are undoubtedly Steuben. The thickness of the overlay of Green Jade on the Alabaster may also make a difference.

As for the diamond pontil I believe that this is a characteristic of the irons that Steuben purchased from the Dixon Company that supplied glass manufacturing supplies in the twenties. Corning Glass bought much of their supplies from this firm.

Best, Bobby Rockwell

Jade Green has formulas that contain uranium and some that do not. Either one is a pleasure to get. Rande Bly
