Carder Steuben Compote - 7315

Relief or Intaglio

Posting Number 3063   Date: 10/19/18     Return to Posting List

We recently featured this plaque in a Gazette with this description:

"Colorless lead glass; pressed. Rectangular panel, intaglio design with half the surface of stylized leaf motifs flanked by elongated triangles in satin finish and the other half with flutes alternating in satin and bright finish."

This panel shows up in the Steuben Architectural Cast Glass catalog in both intaglio or relief. The catalog description is instructive.

"Light Reflected Through the Glass From the Edges

In general there are two methods of decorating cast glass:

1) With the decoration in relief or in intaglio on the back of the glass and a smooth, plain surface on the exposed side.

2)The relief or intaglio on the front surface, with back smooth, or satin, dust-proof finish."

Cairn Gorm

I am happy we have a piece of Cairn Gorm to see what the color looks like in a thinner piece of glass. In the first picture, the colored background interferes with the color. The second picture is another piece of Cairn Gorm to enjoy also that is very color true on a nice background. You can see that this color is just different than Amber. Rande Bly

RENEW ON-LINE

We will shortly be mailing out 2019 renewal envelopes for our members. We would love to save a tree and the mailing costs to the club by having as many members as possible go to the website and renew online before we do the mailing. This is easy to do by clicking on the membership link at the end of every Gazette. If you prefer to send a check and save the PayPal fees, please mail your check ($35 for one person, $55 for two person household) to:

Thank you!

Note: The color of the goblet cited by Rande Bly is not Cairn Gorm. Xray fluorescence analysis shows it does not match any known Carder glass recipe. Scott Hansen
