Gold Aurene Display

Reifschlager Gallery At The Rockwell Museum--pre 2000

Gold Aurene was the first decorative iridescent colored glass produced at the Steuben Glass Works. In the 1890s, whle he was stil at Stevens & Williams, Carder had become intrigued by the golden and rainbow-colored iridescence on Roman glass of the First to Fourth centuries A.D. On ancient glass, such iridescence is caused by a partial disintegration the the glass surface through the action of chemicals in the sol in which t was buried. In England, Carder experimented for years with methods of producing a similar effect, and was about ready to produce his iridescent glass when he came to America. How near he was to success is shown by the historic vase which he made within a year after he started the Steuben Glass Works.
